Follow-Up: Florida Flooding Prompts Emergency Declaration in Seven Counties; Brevard Schools Stay Closed November 3

Monday, November 2, 2026 · States · GSM News

Florida continued to face heavy rain and severe flooding on November 2. GSM reported earlier the same day that overnight rain had flooded streets and closed schools; in the latest development, Governor Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency in seven counties — Brevard, DeSoto, Hardee, Highlands, Indian River, Martin and St. Lucie — to speed resources to affected communities.

A total of 34 Florida counties were under flood watches or warnings on November 2. The National Weather Service said Brevard County was hit the hardest; John Scott, executive director of the Brevard Emergency Operations Center, said parts of the south end of the county saw significant rainfall, and the Weather Service warned of extremely dangerous, life-threatening conditions, advising residents not to travel unless fleeing flooding or under an evacuation order. Osceola, Glades and Indian River counties also reported road closures from flooding.

Schools in Brevard, Glades and Hardee counties were closed November 2; DeSoto County schools will be closed November 3 and 4, and Hardee and Brevard county schools will remain closed November 3. Rain was expected to linger on November 3, with a flood watch for parts of east central Florida through that morning before skies clear midweek; an additional 1 to 2 inches of rain was possible, which could worsen ongoing flooding.
