Walnut Physician Dejun Wang Indicted: Accused of Selling Ozempic and Other Drug Samples to San Gabriel Valley Pharmacies

Los Angeles: The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Central District of California announced on October 22 that Dejun Wang, 62, of Walnut, a physician, has been indicted by a federal grand jury for the prohibited sale of prescription drug samples. Prosecutors allege Wang sold sample drugs, including Rybelsus, Ozempic and Mounjaro, to the owners of pharmacies in the San Gabriel Valley, who repackaged and dispensed them to customers. The Justice Department notes that drug samples are prescription drugs provided to promote a drug's sale and are not intended to be sold.
The case is being investigated by the FBI and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General (HHS-OIG), and is prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Sebastian Bellm. Wang's case is part of a major health care fraud takedown the Justice Department announced in Los Angeles the same day, charging 15 defendants, including six medical professionals, in schemes that collectively resulted in about $2 billion in fraudulent claims, including more than $1.6 billion billed for sham substance abuse treatment that lured vulnerable people to Southern California, and $134 million billed to Medicare for unnecessary arterial procedures. Eight defendants were arrested that day.
The Justice Department emphasizes that an indictment merely contains allegations and that all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. Prosecutors have not announced Wang's potential penalties or court schedule.
