World Series Game 1: Brewers Edge Rays 3-2 as Misiorowski's First Pitch Sets a Series Velocity Record

Game 1 of the 2026 World Series was played on the night of October 23 at American Family Field in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where the Milwaukee Brewers edged the Tampa Bay Rays 3-2 before a sellout crowd of 43,250 to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven series. It is the Brewers' first World Series appearance since 1982, and both clubs are seeking the first championship in franchise history.
Brewers starter Jacob Misiorowski, 24, opened the game with a 103.5 mph fastball to Rays leadoff hitter Yandy Díaz. Measured by MLB's Statcast system, it was the fastest pitch ever recorded in a World Series game, breaking the mark of 103.2 mph set by Aroldis Chapman for the Chicago Cubs in 2016. Misiorowski earned the win, allowing one run on four hits over five innings with three strikeouts. "It's October baseball," he said after the game. "It doesn't matter how you get outs. It's just, 'Get them.'" (per the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel)
Milwaukee struck in the first inning on an RBI triple by Christian Yelich and an RBI single by William Contreras for a 2-0 lead. Tampa Bay got one back in the fourth on a run-scoring grounder by Liam Hicks, and Jackson Chourio's single in the seventh restored the two-run margin. Contreras finished with two hits and threw out two would-be base stealers, while the Rays went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position.
The ninth inning brought the drama: with the bases loaded and one out, Brewers closer Trevor Megill appeared to induce a game-ending double play from Hicks, but a replay review found that shortstop Cooper Pratt's foot had come off the second-base bag, the call was overturned, and Jorge Mateo scored to make it 3-2. Megill then struck out Jonny DeLuca with runners on second and third to end the game. According to NBC Sports, the Game 1 winner has gone on to win the World Series 62.8 percent of the time.
Game 2 is scheduled for the evening of October 24 in Milwaukee, before the series shifts to Tampa Bay for Game 3.
