Sovereignty Wins Breeders' Cup Classic, Giving Godolphin Its First Classic Trophy

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Sovereignty won the $7 million Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) on Oct. 31 at Keeneland in Lexington, Kentucky, beating The Puma by 1 3/4 lengths to give owner-breeder Godolphin its first victory in the race. The win was billed as the cap to the colt's racing career, according to BloodHorse.
Ridden by Junior Alvarado and trained by Bill Mott, the 4-year-old son of Into Mischief covered 1 1/4 miles on dirt in 2:00.36 and earned $3.64 million. Godolphin stablemate Knightsbridge finished third, Japan's T O Password was fourth, and defending champion Forever Young of Japan, the 8-5 favorite, finished fifth — the first time in his career he had been out of the first three, according to Thoroughbred Daily News.
Sovereignty, the 2025 Kentucky Derby winner who also won the Belmont Stakes and the Travers Stakes, became the seventh Kentucky Derby winner to win the Classic and the first to do so as a 4-year-old since Alysheba in 1988. He is a perfect 4-for-4 at 1 1/4 miles.
Godolphin had sent out 19 previous Classic starters without a win. For Mott, it was a third Classic victory, after Cigar in 1995 and Drosselmeyer in 2011, and his 17th Breeders' Cup win overall. Sovereignty retires to stud with a career record of 8-3-1 from 13 starts and earnings of $10,516,550.
