Saturday, October 31, 2026 · Nonprofit · GSM News

The Jean Lumb Foundation in Canada announced the winners of the 29th Jean Lumb Awards on October 30. A record 19 students of Chinese heritage received awards this year, from four provinces: nine recipients from Ontario, eight from British Columbia, and one each from Alberta and Manitoba. Seven are university students and twelve are high school students.

University recipients include Winston Lee of the University of Toronto, who received the Chinese Canadian Studies Award, and Harrison Gao, who received a medicine award at the same university, along with medicine recipients Ryan Ho of McMaster University and Jocelyn Lee of Toronto Metropolitan University, athletics recipient Alexis Kuo, and family medicine recipient Selina Chow.

The high school winners come from cities including Toronto, Vancouver, Victoria, Calgary and Winnipeg, across categories spanning academics, arts, athletics, community service, the environment, innovation and journalism. Two sisters from the Victoria and Vancouver area were honoured for sailing, the first time the awards have recognized the sport. Verity Leung of Vancouver received the arts award, and Cadence Tam of Calgary received the award for overcoming adversity.

Arlene Chan, the eldest daughter of Jean Lumb and President of the Jean Lumb Foundation, said she was honoured to recognize this year's record number of winners, and thanked the judging panel for reviewing hundreds of applications from students across Canada each year, as well as long-serving sponsors including the University of Toronto Scarborough.

The Jean Lumb Awards were established in 1998 to recognize excellence in students of Chinese heritage from across Canada. Over 29 years, more than 185 award alumni have gone on to work in their chosen fields and contribute to communities across Canada, as far north as Nunavut, and worldwide. Jean Lumb was the first Chinese Canadian woman to receive the Order of Canada, recognized for her tireless community work as a voice and advocate for Chinese communities across Canada.

The 29th Annual Jean Lumb Awards ceremony will be held on Sunday, November 1, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. EDT, at the Great Hall, Hart House, University of Toronto, 7 Hart House Circle, Toronto, Ontario.
