Canadiens Edge Penguins 5-4 for Fifth Straight Win: Anderson Scores Twice, Crosby Sets Single-Franchise Assist Mark

The Montreal Canadiens held off the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-4 at Bell Centre on October 31 for their fifth straight win, improving to 9-3-2. Josh Anderson scored twice and added an assist, Chris Kreider had a goal and an assist, and Oliver Kapanen and Alexandre Texier also scored, with Lane Hutson collecting two assists. Rookie goaltender Jacob Fowler made 25 saves to win his seventh straight start, becoming the third Canadiens rookie goaltender in 40 years to win seven in a row.
Four goals arrived inside the first eight minutes: Erik Karlsson opened the scoring on the power play, Kapanen and Anderson replied 24 seconds apart, and Tommy Novak tied it. Texier and Kreider scored 27 seconds apart early in the second period; after Rickard Rakell answered, Anderson deflected Hutson's shot in off a defender to make it 5-3. The periods went 2-2, 3-1 and 0-1.
Sidney Crosby and Erik Karlsson each had a goal and two assists for Pittsburgh. Crosby's assist on the opening goal was the 1,112th of his career, passing Ray Bourque for the most assists by a player with a single franchise in NHL history. Crosby scored with the goaltender pulled and 3:11 remaining, but the Penguins could not find an equaliser. Sergei Murashov made 22 saves; Pittsburgh fell to 5-7-2.
