Seven Delaware Races to Watch as One House Seat Could Decide a Constitutional Supermajority

On November 1, local media in Dover, Kent County, Delaware, rounded up seven races to watch in the November 3 election. Thirteen state lawmakers will not return after this term, and several open House seats could decide whether Democrats win the two-thirds majority needed to amend the state constitution: Democrats already hold two-thirds of the Senate and are one seat short in the House, while a constitutional amendment must pass two consecutive legislatures by two-thirds votes in each.
The Republican primary in District 33 was decided by just seven votes, 1,017 to 1,010, showing how tight the competition is. At the top of the ballot, U.S. Sen. Chris Coons faces Republican Michael Katz, and several U.S. House seats are held by Republican incumbents. Turnout figures available as of the afternoon of November 1 were included in the preview, though they reflect participation, not voter intent.
All Delaware House seats and 11 of the 21 Senate seats are on the ballot this year, so the results of these seven races will decide not only individual seats but could also shift the balance of constitutional-amendment power in the next two legislatures.
