Sunday, November 1, 2026 · Film · GSM News

The 39th Tokyo International Film Festival presented its centerpiece screening on Nov. 1: Godzilla Minus Zero. This year's festival opened on Oct. 26 and runs through Nov. 4, screening more than 200 films. The opening film was Takahisa Zeze's Sukiyaki, and the festival closes with Colony, by South Korean director Yeon Sang-ho.

Godzilla Minus Zero was written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki as the follow-up to his 2023 film Godzilla Minus One, which won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects — the first non-English-language film to win in that category. The festival describes the new film as Japan's first production filmed for IMAX, with Ryunosuke Kamiki and Minami Hamabe returning in the lead roles.

Following the festival screening, Godzilla Minus Zero is scheduled to open in Japanese theaters on Nov. 3 and in North America on Nov. 6. Nov. 3 is also the anniversary of the original 1954 Godzilla release, marked by fans in Japan as Godzilla Day.
