Follow-up: Death Toll in Jordan Church Funeral Shooting Rises to 9 as Survivor Describes Gunmen Firing Into the Dying

Amman — The death toll from the shooting at a Greek Orthodox church funeral in Karak, southern Jordan, has risen to nine, with nearly 40 people wounded, The Associated Press reported on Saturday, October 24. GSM's first report on Friday put the toll at seven dead and 34 wounded; the attack took place during a funeral in the village of Hmood in Karak Governorate, and Jordan's interior minister described it at the time as a terrorist attack.
A survivor told the AP that a trio of masked gunmen fired indiscriminately as people crawled on the ground to escape; the attackers then returned to fire more bullets into the dying and shot at the church facade. The motivation for the attack remains unknown, and no group has claimed responsibility.
Jordan's government has called the attack a terrorist act, and King Abdullah II has ordered authorities to respond firmly. GSM will continue to follow this story line as official figures are updated. (GSM, based on reporting by The Associated Press)
