Michigan Governor Election: AP Calls Race for Benson

The Associated Press called Michigan's governor's race on the evening of November 3 for Democrat Jocelyn Benson, who defeated Republican U.S. Representative John James to succeed term-limited Governor Gretchen Whitmer. Michigan is in the Great Lakes region of the Midwestern United States, and its capital is Lansing.
The AP results page snapshot showed 2,615 of the state's 3,946 precincts reporting, about 66.27 percent, with an estimated 79.92 percent of the vote counted; Benson had 2,131,593 votes to James's 1,764,786.
Benson is Michigan's secretary of state and campaigned on lowering costs, raising wages and ending corruption; her running mate is state Senate Majority Leader Winnie Brinks. James, who had President Donald Trump's endorsement ahead of the primary, was seeking to become Michigan's first Republican governor since Rick Snyder, who served from 2011 to 2019. Michigan governors serve four-year terms and may serve at most two. Results are unofficial until county and state canvassing and certification are complete.
