Wednesday, November 4, 2026 · States · GSM News

The Madison County Sheriff's Office in Nebraska reported on November 2 that deputies arrested a man who rammed a patrol vehicle during a high-speed pursuit that day. Madison County is in northeastern Nebraska with its county seat in Madison, and the pursuit crossed into neighboring Antelope County.

The sheriff's office said deputies had been investigating multiple thefts in recent days and had identified a possible suspect and vehicle, determining with surrounding agencies that the same individual was suspected in similar thefts in neighboring counties, with multiple arrest warrants in process. On the morning of November 2, a resident near Highway 81 and 835 Road reported gasoline stolen from their property and followed the suspect vehicle while staying in contact with 911 dispatch.

Deputies intercepted the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop on 833rd Road northwest of Madison. The driver refused to stop and fled, with speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour at times. The Nebraska State Patrol, Battle Creek Police Department and Madison Police Department assisted as the pursuit continued into Antelope County. On a minimum-maintenance road, the suspect vehicle became stuck, then reversed and intentionally struck a Madison County Sheriff's Office patrol vehicle before fleeing through farm fields. Officers contained the vehicle and used a pursuit intervention technique to stop it; the driver surrendered.

The driver, Zach L. Heying, 30, of rural Petersburg, was taken into custody and is expected to face multiple charges related to the theft investigations, the pursuit and the collision with the patrol vehicle. Sheriff Todd Volk said there is no ongoing threat to the public. The sheriff's office also advised agricultural landowners in Madison and surrounding counties to check their pivot wires for damage or theft.
