Follow-Up: Trump Says War With Iran Will Be "Wrapped Up Soon," Insisting on a Guarantee Tehran Never Gets a Nuclear Weapon

US President Donald Trump said on Friday, October 30, that he believes the war with Iran will end soon, according to Reuters. "It's going to get wrapped up soon," Trump said in an interview with Kansas City radio station KCMO. "We need a guarantee there'll never be a nuclear weapon." He did not say how the war would be brought to an end.

Trump has previously said the United States would not strike Iran before the November 3 midterm elections. Friday's remarks came four days before Election Day.

The war began in late February, when the United States and Israel struck Iran. Washington has since imposed a maritime blockade on Iran, cutting off its oil export revenue and deepening its economic isolation, while the war's impact on global energy costs has weighed on Republican candidates and on Trump's approval ratings.

On a possible path to ending the war, Trump said earlier this week that Vice President JD Vance's letter to Mohsen Rezaei, head of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, was meant to help Iran obtain medical supplies, and he denied having directed it as a move to revive peace talks. Iran's semi-official Tasnim news agency reported on Thursday that Tehran had received Vance's letter but had not yet responded. Qatari mediators presented Iran with a new draft proposal to end the war last Sunday, which a senior Iranian official described as unacceptable ideas rather than a formal offer.
