House Democratic Leader Jeffries Declares Victory: Poised to Become First Black Speaker of the House

Washington, United States — House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries delivered a victory speech late on November 3, after media outlets projected that Democrats would win majorities in both the House and the Senate. Jeffries proclaimed that the great American comeback begins today.
Jeffries attacked the Republican-led congressional agenda of the past two years and pledged to pass legislation reversing steep cuts to programs such as Medicaid that were enacted in a law signed on July 4, 2025. He said the American people have made clear they have had enough of extremism and corruption and want a Congress that delivers for them.
Jeffries, 56, represents a New York City congressional district and is regarded within his party as a consensus-builder. With Democrats regaining the House, he is set to take the speaker's gavel when the new majority is sworn in during the first week of January, becoming the first Black speaker of the US House of Representatives and succeeding the Republicans who controlled the chamber for four years.
Later this month, newly elected House Democrats will meet behind closed doors to choose their candidate for the January speaker election. With counting still under way in much of the country, the final size of the Democratic House majority remains unclear.
