U.S. stocks closed mixed on Monday, October 19, as investors bought back the artificial-intelligence names they sold last week, according to The Edge's market wrap compiled from CNBC and Investing.com closing reports. The Nasdaq Composite rose 1.11 percent to 26,430.89, up 290.85 points. The S&P 500 added 0.41 percent to 7,690.73, up 31.29 points, and the small-cap Russell 2000 rose 0.25 percent to 2,728.30. The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 0.07 percent to 51,966.03, down 36.38 points, the day's only fall among the major indexes. The Nasdaq 100 rose 1.17 percent to 29,529.35, ending five straight declines.

Only four of the eleven S&P 500 sectors rose. Consumer discretionary led with a gain of 2.73 percent; technology added 1.19 percent, its first gain after three declines; communication services rose 0.28 percent and materials 0.08 percent. Utilities fell 1.97 percent, the deepest sector fall, with real estate down 1.17 percent and financials down 0.79 percent. The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) closed 7.75 percent lower at 18.44.

The bond market sold off while equities rallied. On the U.S. Treasury's daily par yield curve, the ten-year yield rose six basis points to 5.15 percent, the two-year rose three basis points to 4.77 percent, and the thirty-year added five basis points to 5.48 percent; the gap between the two- and ten-year yields widened to 38 basis points from 35. The selling mirrored Europe's, where France's ten-year borrowing costs surged after a weekend of violent protests; AJ Bell's Danni Hewson said markets could not simply shrug off the weekend's destruction and that the damage will weigh on an economy already paying heavily to borrow.

The rebound followed Wall Street's worst week since late June. The slide had started with reports of advances by the Chinese memory-chip company CXMT: Micron lost 14.6 percent last week, Samsung Electronics 17.8 percent and SK Hynix 24.3 percent, and the Philadelphia semiconductor index went into Monday on an eight-session losing run, its longest since October 2008. CoreWeave fell more than 25 percent last week. King Lip of BakerAvenue Wealth Management told Investing.com the SI trade "is moving from the promise phase to the proof phase," with investors' focus shifting "from 'buy the theme' to 'show me the return.'" Brent Schutte, Northwestern Mutual Wealth Management's chief investment officer, called the buildout's financing increasingly rate-sensitive and some of it circular: "One company's debt issuance becomes another company's revenue."

The week's earnings arrive quickly: SpaceX and Netflix report on Tuesday, October 20, and Meta Platforms and Tesla on Wednesday, October 21.
