Two West Virginia Rushers Closing on 1,000 Yards in a Possible First Since 2007

Sunday, November 1, 2026 · States · GSM News

On November 1, the West Virginia University football team in Morgantown, Monongalia County, West Virginia, faced a long-absent record prospect: running back Cam Cook and quarterback Michael Hawkins Jr. could both break 1,000 rushing yards in the same season, which would be the school's first such season since 2007. Through eight games, Cook has rushed for 923 yards, 77 short; Hawkins has 836 yards, 164 short.

Together the two have rushed for 1,759 yards and 23 touchdowns, about 84% of West Virginia's rushing total this season; Cook averages 115.4 yards per game and Hawkins 104.5. The only two dual-1,000-yard seasons in school history were both produced by Pat White and Steve Slaton: in 2006 Slaton ran for 1,744 yards and White for 1,219; in 2007 White ran for 1,335 and Slaton for 1,051. White is also the only quarterback in school history to rush for 1,000 yards in a season, doing so in both 2006 and 2007. Hawkins is also closing on two other quarterbacks' single-season marks — Rasheed Marshall's 861 yards in 2004 and Major Harris's 936 in 1989.

West Virginia's remaining schedule has four games — Texas Tech, Kansas, Houston and Utah — and at their current per-game averages, both players have a chance to cross the 1,000-yard line before the regular season ends.
