Follow-Up: Canada Names Four Soldiers Killed in CFB Wainwright Fire; 39 Injured

Ottawa — Canada's Department of National Defence and the Canadian Armed Forces on October 18 formally released the names of the four members killed in a fire-related training incident at CFB Wainwright: Sergeant Morgan Wong, of Edmonton's Loyal Edmonton Regiment, serving with the 3rd Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry (3 PPCLI); and Privates Shaun Farrell, Aidan Goulding and Hayden Lykkemark, all of Edmonton-based 3 PPCLI. The incident occurred at about 4 p.m. MDT on October 17 in the training area of the Alberta base; in addition to the four killed, 39 Canadian Armed Forces members sustained injuries.
According to Reuters' account of the military's Sunday briefing, 19 of the 39 injured are in critical condition. Major-General Wade Rutland, commander of the 1st Canadian Division, told reporters that a smoldering grass fire in the training area suddenly accelerated in gusts reaching 96 km/h, with the fire front advancing about one kilometre in 30 to 60 seconds; the injured were at a section attack training site. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and the military has previously said there is no indication of terrorism.
Defence Minister David J. McGuinty said in the official statement that, on behalf of the Government of Canada, he extended his deepest condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of the four members, and that Canada mourns with the entire Canadian Armed Forces community. Chief of the Defence Staff General Jennie Carignan said the Forces stand with the families and thanked first responders and medical teams. Prime Minister Mark Carney had earlier confirmed the four deaths and ordered flags lowered nationwide; Sunday's official briefing supplied the victims' names and the confirmed injury count.
