Charlotte Council Gets First Public Look at Airport Airline Lease as Cost and Terms Stay Undisclosed

Saturday, October 31, 2026 · Society · GSM News

In Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, the Charlotte City Council will get its first public presentation on Monday, November 2, on the proposed new lease between Charlotte Douglas International Airport and its five signatory airlines: American, Delta, Frontier, Southwest, and United. The presentation is set for the council's 5 p.m. session in Room 267 of the Government Center, with 20 minutes for the presentation and 55 minutes for discussion, streamed live. The council will not vote on Monday.

The Airline Use and Lease Agreement would launch the airport's next round of construction, including an expanded Concourse C with more gates, a passenger tunnel from the main terminal, renovated international arrival areas, and airfield work needed for a fourth parallel runway. The current agreement took effect on July 1, 2016, and was set to expire on June 30, 2026; the two sides extended it to keep negotiating. The airport says the new lease's cost, length, and what the airlines would pay will not be made public until negotiations are complete.

A council motion for a six-week review period was vetoed by the mayor. Airport contract workers have used the lease talks to press wage and job-protection demands; one worker told the council that some co-workers make as little as $12.50 an hour.
