Trump Calls Nicki Minaj Press Secretary Idea 'A Good Idea,' Says He Will Think About It; No Appointment Announced

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump, asked in an October 31 interview with conservative commentator Benny Johnson whether rapper Nicki Minaj could become White House press secretary, responded: "That's a good idea. I think I'll have to think about that. I'm going to think about that," according to Parade, TMZ and other outlets. He then turned the question back on Johnson, saying, "How about you? You'd be pretty good, too." Trump announced no appointment, and the White House has not said any vetting or selection process has begun.
The idea traces to a joke by White House communications director Steven Cheung. On October 25, Cheung posted a video of himself interviewing Minaj aboard Air Force One, captioned, "Ladies and gentlemen, I think we may have found the new White House Press Secretary!" Minaj appeared with Trump the same day at a rally in Port Huron, Michigan, and publicly campaigned for him. Trump adviser Alex Bruesewitz later polled Minaj's fan base on the idea on social media.
The press secretary post has been vacant since mid-October. Trump told reporters on October 23 that he was in "no rush" on a replacement. As of October 31, the White House had made no formal announcement on the position.
