Suspicious-Powder Letters Reach Minnesota; Secretary of State Mailing Intercepted Before Delivery

Sunday, October 18, 2026 · City · GSM News

Minneapolis is a city in Hennepin County, Minnesota. Suspicious mailings have been reported by several Minnesota election officials and lawmakers' offices, the Minnesota News Network reported in its Saturday morning headlines on October 17. A threatening letter containing an unidentified white powder, addressed to Secretary of State Steve Simon's office, was intercepted before delivery, according to the Minnesota Department of Administration. U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar's Minnesota office and the Plymouth district office of U.S. Representative Kelly Morrison also reported suspicious mailings.

The incidents are part of a nationwide series of suspicious mailings: the Seattle office of Representative Pramila Jayapal, Delaware's election commissioner office and several Southern California lawmakers' offices have received similar mail or packages, and the FBI has joined multiple investigations. The Minnesota investigation is ongoing, and officials have not yet released the powder's composition or the sender's identity. With the November 3 midterm elections approaching, threats against election officials have heightened concerns about election security.
