Follow-Up: Pope Leo Returns to Vatican Window Less Than Two Weeks After Surgery, Appeals for End to Yemen Violence

Pope Leo XIV addressed the faithful on October 25 from the window of the Apostolic Palace overlooking St. Peter's Square at the Vatican, calling for an end to the violence in Yemen. According to Reuters, the 71-year-old pontiff reached the window unaided, waved and smiled to the crowd, and spoke in a very firm and clear voice, less than two weeks after his October 13 surgery for lung cancer.
The pope said he was particularly concerned about the humanitarian situation in the southwestern Yemeni city of Taiz, "where the population suffers due to the lack of food, water and medical assistance." "I'm making a heartfelt appeal for the hostilities to stop, so that the people in Yemen and across the entire region can live in peace," he said.
The pope also prayed for those killed and wounded in Friday's attack on Orthodox faithful at the Hamoud church in Jordan, which Reuters reported he described as a terrorist attack. "I'm close to that community and the entire country, which is known for the peaceful and respectful coexistence of different religions," he said. He urged everyone to accompany with prayers a meeting of religious leaders to promote peace scheduled for Tuesday in the Italian city of Assisi; the Vatican said on Friday that the pope had been due to attend the event but cancelled his visit on the advice of doctors to aid his recovery.
GSM previously reported that the pope announced the surgery from the same window on October 11 and underwent removal of the lower lobe of his right lung at Rome's Gemelli Hospital on October 13, with adenocarcinoma diagnosed. Doctors said last week that he would not need any further therapy, indicating that his tumour had not spread.
