Follow-Up: Brewers Beat Rays 4-1 in Game 5 to Win First World Series Title in Franchise History

The Milwaukee Brewers won the first World Series championship in franchise history on Wednesday night, beating the Tampa Bay Rays 4-1 in Game 5 at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida, to close out the series four games to one, according to the Associated Press. The title comes in the 58th season of a franchise that began as the Seattle Pilots in 1969 and moved to Milwaukee in 1970.

Ace Jacob Misiorowski set the tone, throwing 5 2/3 scoreless innings of two-hit ball before leaving in the sixth inning with a right calf cramp and a 4-0 lead, to a standing ovation from the large contingent of Brewers fans. Misiorowski started and won both Game 1 and Game 5 of the Series.

Milwaukee scored first in the second inning when rookie shortstop Cooper Pratt singled home Brice Turang. The Brewers added a run in the fifth, then two more in the sixth on an RBI double by William Contreras and a sacrifice fly by Pratt. Tampa Bay avoided the shutout in the ninth when Chandler Simpson doubled home Liam Hicks, before Trevor Megill recorded the final out of the season.

Pratt, 22, finished with two more hits and two RBIs and set a World Series rookie record with six straight hits across Games 4 and 5. Jackson Chourio set a five-game Series record with 11 hits. Milwaukee went 11-2 in the postseason.

The Brewers' only previous World Series appearance, in 1982, ended in a seven-game loss to the St. Louis Cardinals. After Tampa Bay staved off a sweep with a 12-inning, 4-3 win in Game 4, Milwaukee — playing in the smallest market in the majors — finished the job in Game 5 and will take the Commissioner's Trophy home.
