SAN BERNARDINO, California — The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department issued an advisory on November 7 saying its personnel are under investigation for the alleged assault of an academy trainee, and that the personnel involved have been placed on administrative leave.

The department said that on Thursday, November 5, it received complaints forwarded by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) alleging that an academy trainee was physically assaulted by training staff members while participating in training at the Frank Bland Regional Training Center in San Bernardino.

On Friday, November 6, the Sheriff's Department and the San Bernardino County District Attorney's Office began a joint criminal investigation into the allegations. The department's Professional Standards Division will conduct an administrative investigation to ensure compliance with department policy.

Given the nature of the complaint, the personnel involved have been placed on administrative leave pending completion of the investigation, the department said. Sheriff-Coroner Shannon D. Dicus said the department remains committed to providing a safe training environment for all who choose to join the law enforcement profession.

The advisory, issued through the department's Public Affairs Division (909-387-3700), did not name the personnel or the trainee, nor specify which part of the training the allegations involve. The investigation is ongoing. The department is headquartered at 655 E. 3rd Street in San Bernardino.
