Puerto Rico Receives $16.6 Million in FEMA Funds: Sewer Line and School Repairs Tied to Hurricane Fiona

Puerto Rico Governor Jenniffer González-Colón announced on November 3 that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has awarded Puerto Rico a total of $16,621,064.68 for critical infrastructure and school repairs. The announcement was made in San Juan, and both awards fall under the Hurricane Fiona disaster declaration.
Of the total, $16,385,256.07 goes to the Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority (PRASA) to repair the Juncos-Gurabo sanitary trunk sewer line. Another $235,808.61 goes to the Puerto Rico Department of Education to repair the Avelino Peña Reyes school in Humacao.
Gabriella Boffelli, executive director of the Puerto Rico Federal Affairs Administration (PRFAA), took part in coordinating the federal funding. The governor's office said the money will restore water and sewer infrastructure and educational facilities damaged by Hurricane Fiona.
Hurricane Fiona struck Puerto Rico in 2022, causing widespread power outages and flooding, and recovery projects under its declaration are still receiving federal funds in stages. The sewer repair is the largest single item in this round, while the school award supports repairs at the Humacao campus.
