Indiana Adds More Than 10,600 New Registered Apprentices, Most in a Decade: Active Apprentices Top 27,000, Fourth in the Nation

Indiana Governor Mike Braun announced that the state added more than 10,600 new registered apprentices in the last federal fiscal year, an 11 percent increase over the year before and the most in a decade. Indianapolis, the state capital in Marion County, is home to the state workforce agency that registers and tracks the programs.

Plumbers, carpenters and electricians top the list of new apprentices. Registered apprentices earn a wage while learning on the job and move into skilled-trade positions after completing their programs. Indiana now counts more than 27,000 active apprentices, the fourth most in the nation.

The governor's office credited the growth to the state's promotion of the earn-and-learn model. The Department of Workforce Development's Office of Work-Based Learning and Apprenticeship works with employers to register apprenticeship positions and connects residents with openings.

Apprenticeships are one of the state's main pipelines for skilled trades, with construction and manufacturing employers continuing to demand licensed plumbers, electricians and similar workers. The state says it will keep expanding registered apprenticeships to meet that demand.
