Update: Bend-La Pine Schools Reopen Today With Added Police Presence on Campuses

Wednesday, October 21, 2026 · U.S. States · GSM News

The Bend Police Department in Oregon announced on Oct. 19 that most students in the Bend-La Pine school district would return to class on Wednesday, Oct. 21. Police said they have coordinated with the district's safety team and will keep an increased police presence on and around campuses 'for the foreseeable future' so returning students and staff feel secure. The return plan for Silver Rail Elementary, where the Oct. 15 shooting occurred, is being handled separately: police said the district is preparing to re-enter the building and has not yet announced when that school's students will return.

Four people were killed in the shooting. Memorial items at the school continue to grow, with residents leaving flowers, stuffed animals, balloons and handwritten cards. Police also published community support resources, including the City of Bend community support page, Deschutes County Behavioral Health community support events, and assistance from the Oregon Department of Emergency Management for the Bend community. Police said the shooting remains under investigation, that more verified information will be released as it becomes available, and urged residents to take care of themselves and seek mental health support if needed.
