Arlington Bishop Burbidge Issues Oct. 30 Statement Ahead of National Black Catholic History Month
The statement notes that seven African American Catholics are currently on the path to sainthood, the most recent being Servant of God father Martin de Porres Maria Ward, whose cause was opened in 2022; Ward converted to Catholicism and was baptized at St. Augustine Catholic Church near Washington, D.C. Burbidge said the month should be an opportunity to honour their legacy, celebrate their contributions and ensure that their stories of faith and pers continue.
