Austin Staff Present Updated Community Wildfire Protection Plan to Council: 71 Recommendations and New Countywide Risk Assessments, With Implementation Kickoff Set for November 6

Wednesday, October 21, 2026 · City · GSM News

City staff in Austin, Travis County, Texas, briefed the City Council on October 20 on the 2026 Austin-Travis County Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP), asking the council to adopt the regional framework. The plan carries 71 recommendations aimed at strengthening wildfire preparedness, mitigation, response and community resilience.

The CWPP is a non-regulatory, regional framework developed with Travis County, the Austin-Travis County Wildfire Coalition and state partners, and it updates countywide wildfire risk assessments. Staff said an up-to-date CWPP is necessary for the city and county to remain eligible for many federal and state wildfire grants. "The plan provides updated wildfire risk assessments and 71 recommendations to strengthen wildfire preparedness, mitigation, response, and community resilience," the city manager said during the October 20 briefing.

An implementation kickoff is scheduled for November 6, with a recognition and signing event on December 7. Formal adoption by the council will determine how the framework takes effect at the city level and how grant applications proceed.
