18th Boston Asian American Film Festival Under Way: Opening Film 'Isle Child' Tells a Korean Adoptee's Story

Wednesday, October 21, 2026 · Cities · GSM News

In Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, the 18th Boston Asian American Film Festival (BAAFF) is under way. The festival opened on October 15 and runs through October 25, with screenings from October 16 to 25 held mainly at the Emerson Paramount Center (559 Washington St) in downtown Boston.

The opening film is 'Isle Child,' directed by Thomas Percy Kim, which screened on the evening of October 15 at the Coolidge Corner Theatre in Brookline, followed by a Q&A with the director. The film tells the story of a Korean-American adoptee who discovers a hidden letter revealing that his birth mother is terminally ill in Korea, and must choose between his settled life in the United States and the painful truth of his past.

The festival is a co-production of the Asian American Resource Workshop (AARW) and ArtsEmerson. It aims to showcase Asian American experiences through film and to serve as a resource for Asian American filmmakers and the Greater Boston community. The festival is, in its organizers' words, here for audiences 'to see and be seen, to hear and be heard.' This year's lineup includes narrative features, documentaries and shorts programs, as well as a free SAG-AFTRA panel on October 18. Tickets start at $15, and the full schedule is available on the festival's website.
