Groundbreaking Held for West Charlotte's River District: 1,400-Acre Planned Community Breaks Ground

Thursday, October 22, 2026 · City · GSM News

The River District, a large planned community in west Charlotte, North Carolina, held a groundbreaking ceremony on October 21, formally launching the 1,400-acre mixed-use project. Developer Crescent Communities said it will include more than 2,300 single-family homes, 2,350 multifamily apartments and additional senior units, over 5,000 homes and apartments in total.

More than 500 apartments and 124 houses will be reserved as affordable housing in a community called Westrow, whose first homes are expected to be ready for move-in early next year. The project also plans 8 million square feet of commercial space including hotels, 40% open space, 30 miles of trails, and the city's only public access to the Catawba River.

The site, between Interstate 485 and the Catawba River near Charlotte Douglas International Airport, is among the largest remaining undeveloped tracts in Mecklenburg County. First proposed in 2016, the project has received millions in city investment. Councilmember Tariq Bokhari said the city would do its due diligence on bidding so all businesses are included. The full community will be built in phases and could take up to three decades.
