Wegmans' First Charlotte Store Opens in Ballantyne: 110,000 Square Feet, 450 Employees
Charlotte is a city in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. GSM reported on October 11 that Charlotte's first Wegmans store was set to open on October 14 with about 450 jobs. The store opened in the Ballantyne neighborhood at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, October 14, at 11550 North Community House Road, covering 110,000 square feet.
According to the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle, it is Wegmans' fifth location in North Carolina; the company's other stores in the state are in Chapel Hill, Raleigh, West Cary and Wake Forest. The store is less than a half-mile from The Bowl at Ballantyne, a mixed-use development. Wegmans worked with real estate firm Northwood Office to secure the location. When plans were announced in 2024, Clifton Coble, Northwood's senior vice president of development, said the community needed a more experiential grocery store.
In its press release, Wegmans said the Ballantyne store is led by Store Manager Patrick McGuinness and has a team of 450 employees. The store includes produce, seafood, meat, bakery, deli and cheese departments, along with ready-to-eat and ready-to-heat foods. The release said Executive Chef Rich Lawson and his culinary staff prepare foods including fresh sushi, pizza, wings, hot soup, salads and sandwiches, and that the store also offers Asian-inspired cuisine and a self-serve coffee station.
The Democrat and Chronicle reported that the company expected a large turnout and allowed overnight tailgating in the store's parking lot starting Tuesday, October 13, with staff to oversee the festivities and portable restrooms and handwashing stations provided. Wegmans said in its release that the Ballantyne team had already contributed over $30,000 to local neighbors through community donations and sponsorships.
