Two Proposed Hospitals Would Add 200 Beds in Charlotte Area; State Decision Expected by March 2027

Charlotte media reported on October 14 that Duke Health and CaroMont Health have filed Certificate of Need applications with North Carolina to build two hospitals in Mecklenburg County, adding 200 beds in total. One is planned for the University City/Mallard Creek area with 120 beds, and the other for the River District with 80 beds.
The systems said the hospitals would be run by a new company owned and operated equally by Duke Health, based in Durham, and CaroMont Health, based in Gastonia, while both organizations remain separate and keep operating their existing facilities. Duke Health CEO David W. Zaas said the fast-growing region needs more local access to care and more choices.
The 2026 North Carolina State Medical Facilities Plan estimates Mecklenburg County needs 389 additional hospital beds. State regulators are reviewing the applications and are expected to decide by the end of March 2027; if approved, the hospitals could open as early as 2031.
