Chicago-area House members hit by second round of suspicious letters within a week

CHICAGO, Illinois — District offices of several Chicago-area members of Congress, in Cook County, Illinois, have been targeted by suspicious letters twice within a week. On October 21, Rep. Jan Schakowsky's Skokie office and Rep. Mike Quigley's Chicago office each received a second suspicious letter; staff alerted authorities, offices were evacuated, and the FBI and hazardous-materials personnel responded. The contents remain under investigation, and both offices said all staff are safe.

The first round arrived on October 16, when the district offices of Schakowsky, Quigley, Brad Schneider, Robin Kelly and Raja Krishnamoorthi all received suspicious mail. Schneider's office said its letter contained a suspicious substance that testing found not harmful. Schakowsky said her team did not open the first letter thanks to a warning from the House Sergeant at Arms. Quigley called the second mailing "clearly another effort to scare and intimidate elected officials, public servants, and voters in the lead-up to the coming midterm elections," and urged leaders of both parties to condemn political violence.

The mailings are part of a nationwide series targeting congressional and election offices; the FBI is investigating with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and the U.S. Capitol Police.
