A flag-raising ceremony was held at noon on Oct. 14 at Daley Plaza in downtown Chicago, in Cook County, Illinois. The event, billed as a celebration of U.S.-China friendship, was organized by a Midwest Chinese community committee formed to mark the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States and the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, and drew representatives from government, overseas Chinese organizations and community groups.

According to the Chicago Chinese Times, the ceremony began at 12 p.m., with the flags of the United States, China and Illinois raised over the plaza. The program opened with a lion dance by the Lee Family Association, followed by the flag-raising, guest speeches and cultural performances.

Dr. Hong Liu, chair of the organizing committee, thanked attending guests, community leaders and members of the Chinese community, saying participants shared good wishes for the peoples of both countries and hopes for peace, friendship and cooperation, and that Chinese Americans living in the United States would continue to serve as a bridge promoting community exchange. Guests included Illinois State Rep. La Shawn Ford and Chicago Deputy Mayor for Business and Community Development Max Budovitch.

Daley Plaza is Chicago's civic center plaza, known for its Picasso sculpture. It hosts large public events year-round and is a frequent venue for major celebrations by the local Chinese community.
