Ohio State University's Board of Trustees voted last week to appoint Ravi Bellamkonda, dean of Emory University's engineering school, as the university's 17th president. He takes office January 1, succeeding interim president Peter Mohler. Trustee Krisanthe Vlachos said the search committee unanimously considered Bellamkonda the ideal choice to lead the school's 'Education for All' strategy.

Bellamkonda became dean of Emory's Robert W. Woodruff School of Engineering in 2024 after 21 years at Duke University. A biomedical engineering scholar focused on regenerative medicine and devices for the nervous system, he was born in India and grew up on a cotton farm without electricity, sitting in a biology classroom for the first time at 17; he calls himself an 'accidental engineer.'

'I've been preparing for this moment my whole life,' Bellamkonda said. Ohio State is one of the largest public research universities in the United States, with more than 60,000 students, a major medical center and a vast alumni network. (GSM, from Columbus Dispatch reporting)
