Detroit Brownfield Board Advances Renaissance Center Incentive 4-2; $2.2 Billion Project Heads to City Council

Detroit is a city in Wayne County, Michigan. The Detroit Free Press reported on October 14 that the Detroit Brownfield Redevelopment Authority voted 4-2 that day to approve a Transformational Brownfield incentive request for the Renaissance Center redevelopment and send it to the Detroit City Council. The incentive captures future state-level taxes generated at the site and is valued at about $300 million, a key part of the $2.2 billion redevelopment plan.
Board members Maggie DeSantis and Eric Dueweke, who voted no, said they did not oppose the redevelopment or the incentive, but objected to approving it while the project's community benefits package is still being negotiated. A nine-member Neighborhood Advisory Council set up under Detroit's Community Benefits Ordinance is negotiating the package with developers Bedrock and General Motors.
Advisory council member Teron Haynes Jr. asked during public comment for a postponement until the authority's next meeting on October 28 so negotiations have appropriate time to finish. DeSantis said approving the request before that work is done disrespects the Community Benefits Ordinance process. No council consideration date has been announced.
