U-D Jesuit Buys 16 Acres of Former Michigan State Fairgrounds in Detroit

Friday, October 16, 2026 · City · GSM News

Detroit is a city in Wayne County, Michigan. An all-boys Catholic school in Detroit has purchased part of the former Michigan State Fairgrounds along Woodward Avenue near 8 Mile Road. The University of Detroit Jesuit High School and Academy recently bought two noncontiguous parcels totaling 16 acres at the former fairgrounds. The private school, which serves grades 7 through 12, said in a statement issued Oct. 16 that the purchase reflects its longstanding commitment to the city, its neighborhood and the young men it serves, and that future plans will be guided by a comprehensive vision covering its existing campus at 8400 Cambridge Ave. and its Johnson Recreation Center at 8550 Chippewa Ave., both about three miles away. A school representative declined to disclose the total price. City records show the 11-acre parcel at 20200 Woodward changed hands for $2.5 million on July 1, and Crain's Detroit reported the five-acre parcel at 19950 Woodward sold last month for just over $1.5 million. The seller, an entity called Magic Plus, had ties to the estate of developer Joel Ferguson, a Michigan State University trustee who died in 2024 at age 85. The Michigan State Fair was held at the site from 1905 to 2009.

The Detroit Free Press reported that the seller, Magic Plus LLC, once counted retired basketball star Earvin "Magic" Johnson and Marvin Beatty among its partners; Johnson later exited the venture.
