University of Hawai'i names baseball great Kolten Wong special advisor to athletics

HONOLULU, Hawaii — The University of Hawai'i at Manoa, in Honolulu County, Hawaii, announced on October 22 that baseball great Kolten Wong, an 11-year Major League Baseball veteran, has been named special advisor to UH Athletics. He will work directly with Athletics Director Matt Elliott and the senior leadership team on special projects, and support head baseball coach Rich Hill's program in recruiting, player development and community outreach.
A Hilo native, Wong starred for the Rainbow Warriors from 2009 to 2011, earning first-team All-America honors in 2011, compiling a .358 career batting average and a .563 slugging percentage that ranks third in school history, and leading Hawai'i to back-to-back Western Athletic Conference titles in 2010 and 2011. Drafted in the first round by the St. Louis Cardinals in 2011, he went on to play more than 1,100 big-league games for the Cardinals, Milwaukee Brewers, Seattle Mariners and Los Angeles Dodgers, winning Gold Glove Awards in 2019 and 2020, and was inducted into the UH Sports Circle of Honor in 2025.
"Kolten Wong embodies everything that makes Hawai'i Athletics special," Elliott said. Wong said he wants to use the knowledge, experience and relationships from his career to help players develop, and to give Hawai'i's baseball talent every reason to stay home.
