Makapuʻu Lookout in Honolulu Closes Temporarily for Repairs Through November 4: Main Trail and Parking Unaffected

Thursday, October 22, 2026 · City · GSM News

HONOLULU, Hawaii — The Makapuʻu Lookout, part of the Kaiwi State Scenic Shoreline in Honolulu County, Hawaii, closed temporarily for repairs starting October 21, with work scheduled through Wednesday, November 4, 2026, the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of State Parks (DLNR DSP) announced.

During work hours — 6 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding holidays — the upper viewing area will be fully closed. Outside work hours, from 2:30 p.m. to 6 a.m. on weekdays and all day on weekends and holidays, the upper viewing platform will be partially closed, allowing limited viewing. The closure affects only the lookout adjacent to the north of the main trail; access and parking for the main Makapuʻu Point Lighthouse Trail are not affected.

Abhe & Svoboda, Inc. is the contractor on the project. State Parks staff asked visitors to respect construction signage and stay within designated open areas, and noted that inclement weather may push the construction dates. Updates will be posted on the DLNR Division of State Parks website. (GSM, based on a Hawaii DLNR news release)
