Minneapolis Mayor to Nominate Interim Chief Bill Peterson as Permanent Police Chief

Saturday, October 10, 2026 · City · GSM News

Minneapolis is a city in Hennepin County, Minnesota. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey plans to nominate Interim Police Chief Bill Peterson to lead the Minneapolis Police Department on a permanent basis. Peterson is a 30-year veteran of the department who previously served as First Precinct inspector and has worked in special operations, violent-crime investigations and major-event planning; he has served as interim chief since former Chief Brian O'Hara resigned in May.

The appointment requires approval from the Minneapolis City Council. City leaders have described the police chief selection as one of the mayor's most important remaining hires, with the next chief expected to focus on public safety and rebuilding trust between the department and the community.
