Minneapolis Council Advances Plan to Eliminate Office of Community Safety; Mayor Frey Objects

Minneapolis is a city in Hennepin County, Minnesota. FOX 9 reported that a Minneapolis City Council committee advanced a proposal on October 13 to eliminate the Office of Community Safety (OCS). Mayor Jacob Frey objected, saying the office manages services such as mental health response, violence prevention and police reform, and that elimination would put them in jeopardy. OCS has a $16 million budget. Its head, Todd Barnette, who was not reappointed by the council, has announced he will resign at the end of the year and stay on as interim director until a successor is found. The proposal goes to a public hearing on October 27 and to the full council on October 29.
