Minneapolis Superintendent Recommends No School Closures This Year, Reversing Proposal to Shut Up to 12 Schools
Minneapolis is a city in Hennepin County, Minnesota. A major Minneapolis school closure proposal appeared to change direction during a public meeting Tuesday night, FOX 9 reported on October 13. Minneapolis Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Lisa Sayles-Adams started Tuesday's board meeting by saying she recommends that no schools close at this time.
District officials had proposed to close up to 12 schools as the district stares down a nearly $40 million budget shortfall, but other officials said the proposed school closures have nothing to do with saving money; instead, the district said closing schools would allow it to put more money toward students and staff. Officials are considering three options and plan to vote in November. It is still unclear whether the superintendent's recommendation was final, or whether some kind of vote could still happen.
The issue also drew in City Hall. City Council Member LaTrisha Vetaw co-authored a resolution asking school board members to delay the vote on school closures. Before Tuesday night's meeting, Vetaw said she had spoken with school board members that morning about a possible big announcement around the resolution, and that she wanted to keep moving it forward while possibly withdrawing it at a later date depending on how the meeting went. A committee passed the resolution through for a full council vote Thursday, though it may not be necessary.
Council Member Soren Stevenson said he co-authored the resolution because many parents, families and educators in his area in south Minneapolis are really upset about the plan, particularly the closing of Field Elementary. Tuesday night's school board meeting appeared to be moving in a different direction because of community concerns. It remains unclear whether the school board considers the closure proposal over, or whether a vote could still happen.
