Murrieta Children's Library Expansion Nears Finish: Grand Opening Set for February 2027, Adds 4,500 Sq Ft

Murrieta is a city in Riverside County, California. The Murrieta Public Library's Children's Library expansion is entering its final stretch. According to the City of Murrieta's official project page (updated October 2026), construction is scheduled to be completed by January 2027, with a grand opening planned for February 2027 — just in time to celebrate Love Your Library Month.
The expansion will add approximately 4,500 square feet to the Children's Library, bringing the total children's area to more than 7,200 square feet and creating more room for children and families to read, learn, explore, play, and take part in the library's many programs and activities.
Project highlights announced by the city include:
- Dedicated Storytime Suite: a 1,320-square-foot space that can be divided into two rooms;
- Expanded Children's Floor: additional stacks and direct access to storytime rooms to ease crowding;
- Flexible Learning Areas: capacity for approximately 100 children for storytimes, crafts, STEM programs and more;
- Toddler & Sensory Zones: interactive spaces for early learning and inclusive experiences;
- Tween Zone: the existing 2,700-square-foot children's area will be remodeled into a dedicated space for tweens;
- Outdoor Garden Expansion: enhancements to the Carol Carson Garden of Verses to support year-round programming.
The project is funded by a broad coalition of partners: the California State Library, Library Development Impact Fees, Measure T funds, the Friends of the Murrieta Library, the Murrieta Public Library Foundation, Water District support, and donations from the community.
Background: in October 2025, the library announced it had secured more than $1.5 million in grants toward a nearly 20% expansion of the children's area. A month later, students at 11 Murrieta Valley Unified elementary schools collected $1,068.47 in a penny drive and presented the funds to the library foundation to support the expansion. The library temporarily closed Nov. 3–7, 2025 to relocate materials and furniture ahead of construction.
