OHSU president urges gun owners to use gun locks as children's hospital hands out free cable locks

PORTLAND, Oregon — The president of Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) in Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon, is urging all gun owners to use gun locks at home when their firearms are not in use. Dr. Shereef Elnahal, formerly the Department of Veterans Affairs' undersecretary for health, said distributing gun locks was a top priority in that role, and that gun locks are proven to reduce shootings and suicides.
"Gun locks are the first tier of safe storage," Elnahal said. "There is a spectrum of ways to, as a firearm owner, ensure that no child gets access to those firearms. And if they do, that they won't be able to use them."
The Tom Sargent Safety Resource Center at OHSU's Doernbecher Children's Hospital offers free cable locks and discounts on gun safes, and families can call for a home-safety consultation. The center also provides discounted locking storage for medications and other items, Elnahal said.
