Carnegie Robotics Purchases Its Historic Blue Building Headquarters: From Tenant to Owner

PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania — Carnegie Robotics, a Pittsburgh robotics and autonomous technology company, announced on October 22 that it has purchased its longtime headquarters and the surrounding four-acre property at 4501 Hatfield Street from the Regional Industrial Development Corporation (RIDC). The 50,000-square-foot property, known throughout Pittsburgh as the “Blue Building,” has been the company's home since 2014 and was once part of the historic Heppenstall Steel Company.
Carnegie Robotics was founded in 2010 by John Bares, former director of Carnegie Mellon University's National Robotics Engineering Center. It has grown from a small startup into a nationally recognized leader in commercial and defense autonomy — without venture capital, private equity, or outside investors. RIDC acquired the former Heppenstall property in 2002 and, with support from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the Richard King Mellon Foundation and RIDC's Manufacturing Loan Fund, completed environmental remediation and redevelopment.
Bares said the milestone would not have happened without RIDC's early trust and support. Donald F. Smith Jr., president of RIDC, said the partnership demonstrates the kind of long-term economic impact RIDC was created to foster. In 2015 the company helped launch Uber's Advanced Technologies Group, and it is today a key technology provider for the U.S. Army's autonomous ground vehicle modernization efforts.
