Crosby Ends Six-Game Goal Drought With Two Goals, but Penguins Fall 5-3 in Chicago
Pittsburgh is a city in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. The Pittsburgh Penguins lost 5-3 to the Chicago Blackhawks at the United Center on Tuesday night, October 13. Penguins captain Sidney Crosby scored his first two goals of the season to end a six-game goal drought to open the campaign, but after tying the game in the third period, Pittsburgh surrendered two goals in the final five minutes. The Penguins, who entered the game with a 3-2-1 record, were opening a road trip. GSM previously reported that Blackhawks captain Connor Bedard was expected to make his season debut in this game; he returned to the lineup and recorded an assist in the first period.
Teuvo Teravainen opened the scoring just 28 seconds into the first period off a feed from Anton Frondell. Crosby tied it 1-1 about seven minutes in, carrying the puck into the offensive zone and snapping a wrist shot from the right circle past Spencer Knight. Roman Kantserov restored Chicago's lead on the power play with 2:10 remaining in the first period, burying a one-timer off a touch pass from Connor Bedard, and Kantserov's second goal midway through the second period made it 3-1. Nick Robertson cleaned up a rebound with 2:09 remaining in the second to pull Pittsburgh within 3-2, and Crosby tied the game 3-3 at 9:17 of the third period, sliding home the rebound of Connor Dewar's initial shot.
Teravainen scored his second of the game with 4:18 remaining to put Chicago back on top 4-3, his shot deflecting off goaltender Sergei Murashov, and Tyler Bertuzzi sealed the win with an empty-net goal with just 10 seconds remaining. The game's three stars were Teravainen (two goals, one assist), Kantserov (two goals) and Frondell (two assists).
Crosby, 39, is in his 22nd NHL season. According to ESPN Insights, he had been scoreless in his first six games this season, which was tied for the most games without a goal to start a season in his career; his two goals on Tuesday meant he avoided setting that unwanted personal record outright.
