Thursday, October 22, 2026 · City · GSM News

The City of Sacramento, California, announced on October 22 that it has launched a nationwide recruitment for its next police chief and is inviting residents to help shape the selection through a community survey.

According to Sacramento City Express, the city's official news platform, City Manager Maraskeshia Smith said: "Selecting our next police chief is one of the most important decisions I will make as City Manager, and I want our community to have a voice in that process. We want to hear directly from residents and businesses about their public safety priorities, their expectations for the Police Department and the leadership qualities they believe are essential for Sacramento's next chief."

The survey asks about public safety priorities, expectations for the Police Department and the leadership qualities residents want in the next chief, and is open online through November 5. To encourage participation from the city's diverse communities, the survey is also offered in Spanish, Hmong, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese. Ralph Andersen & Associates is conducting the national search for an experienced, collaborative leader who can advance public safety, support department employees and strengthen community trust. The recruitment follows the retirement of former chief Kathy Lester; Zachary Bales is serving as interim chief. Applications close November 9, 2026, candidate interviews are expected in early December, and a final selection is anticipated between late December and early January, with dates tentative.
