Salt Lake City Names Joel Long as Its First Poet Laureate
Salt Lake City is a city in Salt Lake County, Utah. The Salt Lake City Arts Council and the Mayor's Office announced the appointment of Joel Long as the city's inaugural Poet Laureate, selected through a competitive review by a committee of literary professionals, educators and community representatives, for a three-year term through June 2029. In the role he will write annual civic poems, give readings in all seven council districts, develop public programmes and create a signature project tying poetry to community life. Mayor Erin Mendenhall said Long has spent decades uplifting the city's literary community. Long has taught English and creative writing at Rowland Hall since 2004, is the author of seven books including five poetry collections, and led the City Art Reading Series from 2002 to 2023, organising nearly 600 readings.
