Wednesday, October 21, 2026 · Cities · GSM News

The latest update on Pittsburgh Penguins 19-year-old forward Ben Kindel came from Salt Lake City, Utah: the Penguins announced on October 21 that General Manager and President of Hockey Operations Kyle Dubas, who stayed in Utah with Kindel, is scheduled to address the Pittsburgh media at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 22, before the team's morning skate, to give an update on Kindel's status. The team called off its scheduled mandatory practice on Wednesday and made the skate optional instead. The Penguins have yet to provide a formal update on Kindel and have asked for privacy for Kindel and his family. The team is set to host the Florida Panthers at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, and no roster moves have been announced.

Background: shortly after the team plane departed Salt Lake City International Airport on Tuesday, October 20, Kindel had a medical episode on board. He was promptly attended to by team physician Dr. Dharmesh Vyas and the rest of the Penguins' medical staff, and the flight made an emergency landing back at Salt Lake City International Airport, where an ambulance was waiting to take him to University of Utah Hospital. As of Tuesday, Kindel was in stable condition and was conscious and alert. Members of the Penguins' management, coaching and medical staff remained with Kindel in Utah, while the rest of the team flew back to Pittsburgh later that day.
