Asian Grocery Chain Uwajimaya to Open Two More Stores in 2027, in Tacoma and Issaquah

Wednesday, October 21, 2026 · Cities · GSM News

Uwajimaya, the Seattle-based Asian grocery chain in Washington state, will open two more stores in the state in 2027, in Tacoma and Issaquah, bringing its total to six stores across Washington and Oregon. The Kitsap Sun reported on the expansion and the chain's 98th anniversary celebrations on October 21.

Both new stores will be in retail plazas: the Tacoma store at Tacoma Central, at 3202 S 23rd St, and the Issaquah store at Town and Country Square, at 1175 NW Gilman Blvd, in a former Rite Aid building where construction has begun. Specific opening dates are to be announced.

Uwajimaya was founded in 1928 by Fujimatsu Moriguchi, who first sold homemade fishcakes and other Japanese goods from his truck in Tacoma; the store is named after Uwajima, the Japanese town where he learned food processing. During World War II, the Moriguchi family was sent to the Tule Lake internment camp in California, and the store relocated to Seattle after the war. The chain later opened in Bellevue in 1978, in Beaverton, Oregon, in 1998, and in Renton in 2009. This October, Uwajimaya is marking 98 years with a month of coupons and deals, and all stores are hosting a Nagano Food Fair from October 21 to November 3 with samples and other treats featuring products from Japan's Nagano prefecture.
