San Francisco Upgrades Three Public Basketball Courts, Adding Official WNBA Three-Point Lines

Friday, October 16, 2026 · City · GSM News

San Francisco is a city in San Francisco County, California (a consolidated city-county). San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie on October 16 unveiled an official WNBA three-point line at Margaret S. Hayward Playground in the Western Addition, the latest step in a partnership among the WNBA, the Golden State Valkyries and the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department to upgrade three public basketball courts across the city.

The new "Fire Orange" line at Hayward Playground is part of the WNBA's "Line 'Em Up" initiative, and the court also carries Valkyries and WNBA logos on its surface and backboards. A second court, at Joe DiMaggio Playground in North Beach, has received the same official three-point line. The city says the two playgrounds are the first public courts in California to get the league's official line. The upgrades come as the Valkyries head to the WNBA Finals and San Francisco prepares to host the WNBA All-Star Game in 2027.

On Wednesday, the renovated Nate Thurmond Panhandle Basketball Courts reopened. Funded by the Golden State Warriors, the Golden State Community Foundation and the Good Tidings Foundation, the project resurfaced and repainted the courts in Warriors colors, installed new rims and backboards, and added artwork honoring the late Hall of Famer — the third time the partners have refurbished the courts named for him.
